How Germany Became a Pixel Art Hub: History, Culture, and Trends

One way designers get around being stuck with one size is to design in vector art programs (typically Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw). Vector art programs use paths and shapes instead of pixels (Raster images) to determine shape and color. These shapes and paths can be enlarged and are not dependent to a pixel size, so their quality remains intact when sized. Typically people use vector programs to create logos and text, but are popular amongst designers because of their friendliness towards scalability. Sven Ruthner (1980) lives and works in Germany. He is best known for his pixel artwork, which has garnered international attention as well as being widely appreciated on Demoszene. Ruthner has been making art his whole life. He draws his inspiration from theater, language and art; other influences include computer games and the demoscene sub culture, which is no surprise given the origin of pixel art. He experiments with the limited and strict color palettes from the 1980's and 1990's eras of computing, such as EGA and Biography

While I see how this style can incite nostalgia in some long term gamers I believe that pixel art is an appealing aesthetic on its own. Someone who has not played 8-bit games would still notice the vibrant colors and the complexity that can be achieved using simple computer graphics. Aside from the cartoon style, Being able to create the illusion of 3D using only pixels is an art form in itself. I think these are some of the main reasons why 2D pixelated video games are still being made.

Through a series of activities, pupils create their own pixel artwork and discover how the number of pixels, or picture elements, impacts how well the image represents the original object. Pupils also learn about various art techniques using geometrical components to build a larger image, from the dots often used in Aboriginal art to the pixels used by the urban artist Invader.

Admittedly, games are getting more and more visually advanced each year, giving us photorealistic landscapes, reflections, and life-like protagonists. However, not all developers strive for realism, as many of them opt for a more stylized art style that, more often than not, ages way better than realistic graphics. Today we'd like to highlight the most beautiful pixel art games that evoke your nostalgia for times when characters were just a blip on a screen.

This article will provide a selection of games with pixel art from various genres. We also decided to focus on more recent titles, so, unfortunately, no classics this time. However, if you're interested in this particular topic, you can check out our list of the best retro games that have stood the test of time.

Dead Cells is undeniably one of the best-looking pixel games. It constitutes a blend of a few genres, including action games, roguelikes, platformers, and metroidvanias, which makes for fascinating gameplay. It mainly focuses on traversing procedurally generated dungeons and fending off enemies.

The beautiful pixel art of Axiom Verge and Axiom Verge 2 will surely leave a lasting impression on you. In keeping with the metroidvania genre, these games offer gameplay that emphasizes exploring locations, combat, and uncovering hidden secrets.

The gameplay mainly involves exploration and interacting with the people you meet. However, sometimes you have to fight monsters or solve environmental puzzles. It's undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous pixel graphics games that are underhyped.

Next on our list of best pixel games is Songs of Conquest, which was inspired by 90s classics like the Heroes of Might and Magic series. During the playthrough, you'll expand your kingdom, explore a varied world, and crush your enemies to take control over the whole land ultimately.

Whether you're a fan of the movies and cartoons featuring these iconic turtles or just want to play one of the best local co-op games around, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge is an excellent pick. Especially if you fall into the former category, you're in for a real treat. Not only does the title bring back the beloved characters, but it also boasts fast-paced, fun gameplay, a catchy soundtrack, and dazzling pixel graphics.

Look no further if you fancy fast-paced pixel art games. Enter the Gungeon combines a dungeon crawler and a shooter that focuses on traversing procedurally generated rooms brimming with enemies. No two runs are the same, as each time, the layout of the temple, adversaries, stores, and items are randomized.

Although the title can be enjoyed solo, it becomes even more exhilarating when played with others. Collaborating with teammates allows you to focus on the things you enjoy most while relying on your companions to handle the rest. Unquestionably, it deserves its place among the best games with pixel art.

No JRPG fan should ignore Octopath Traveler and its sequel. These feature beautiful pixel art graphics accompanied by a captivating story. Actually, it would be better to call them "stories," as players follow the fates of eight different protagonists.

But it's the night when the real fun begins. To ensure the stock is full, you must venture into dungeons full of powerful enemies to get new artifacts to sell. The game's really alluring with its beautiful pixel art, upbeat soundtrack, and enjoyable gameplay. It's definitely a must-play for fans of roguelikes.

Get ready for a mesmerizing journey as you'll travel through breathtaking locations, fight more and more powerful enemies, and complete the quests. Besides the protagonist, there are three other playable characters with unique abilities. Without a doubt, it's one of the most stunning pixel graphics games out there.
